Spring cleaning, where do I start?

Spring cleaning, where do I start?

Depending on who you ask, the idea of ‘spring cleaning’ originates from various places, but we think it’s simply because spring makes you feel invigorated and ready for a change-up!

You start to see flowers emerging from the ground, the days get longer but your clutter seems to loom. It can feel overwhelming at first to tackle your home that’s accumulated excess piles of clothing and bric-a-brac over the darker months.

Our organising experts here at Packmate have put together this helpful guide to make the task of decluttering and spring-cleaning your home less daunting.

Make a list

We all love a good list, and there’s a great reason! They allow you to break a huge undertaking into smaller, manageable tasks. We recommend starting your spring clean by listing chores, room by room. Tackle the largest or most cluttered area of your home first and write down all the things you need to do. In your bedroom for example, this could be:

  • Sorting through your wardrobe and donating or selling any unloved clothing
  • Organising your jewellery box
  • Tackling what’s under the bed
  • Sorting through your make-up and throwing away any out-of-date items
  • Dust and clean all the uncluttered surfaces

Once you see the check-list getting shorter, you’ll start to feel your mess-stress lifting!

Think green

When it comes to cleaning your now-decluttered space, instead of stocking up on lots of toxic chemicals, you can use natural combinations that are just as effective. Mix ¼ cup of white distilled vinegar, 1 tbsp of baking soda, the juice of ½ a lemon and 1 litre of water for a multi-purpose cleaner! You can even add a few drops of your favourite essential oil for a delightful smell.

Pet hairs

Although pets bring years of joy, their hairs can get everywhere! A great hack is to use a rubber glove. The friction caused when you wipe your rubber-gloved hands over your sofa means the pet hair will stick. Alternatively, simply dampen your rubber glove and hair will lift away. Use a clean cloth to remove the hair and repeat!

Commit to new cleaning habits

Now that your home is spic-and-span, don’t let your hard work go to waste. Make sure you keep up with a cleaning routine to maintain a fresh and clutter-free space. We recommend creating a schedule throughout the week so that it doesn’t become an overwhelming chore again. Don’t try and do everything all at once, spend 15 minutes each day ticking off tasks from the room-by-room list you created and you’ll find home maintenance to be a breeze. We’ve compiled a schedule that might help:

  • Monday: Clean bathrooms
  • Tuesday: Dust the house
  • Wednesday: Vacuum
  • Thursday: Mop kitchen floors
  • Friday: Wipe down skirting boards
  • Saturday: Laundry day
  • Sunday: Clean windows/gardening tasks
